Sunil Joshi Leaves PBKS, May Join BCCI Centre of Excellence
Former India spinner Sunil Joshi has stepped down from his role with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Joshi, who was part of the Ricky Ponting-led support staff as spin-bowling coach, informed the franchise on Sunday about his inability to continue.
Future Plans: BCCI CoE
Sources indicate that Joshi may join the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at its Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. PBKS confirmed his exit, with a franchise official stating: “He has written to us about his unavailability for the coming season. He is a good guy, and the franchise has a good equation with him. But we don’t want to come in the way of someone’s career growth.” Cricbuzz reports.
Rapport with Ricky Ponting
Joshi reportedly informed head coach Ricky Ponting about his decision. While Ponting could not be immediately reached for comment, he is understood to have appreciated Joshi’s choice and recognised potential opportunities at the BCCI CoE. Joshi has maintained a strong professional relationship with the coaching staff and players at PBKS.
Career Background
Joshi has previously worked with PBKS under head coach Anil Kumble between 2020-22, later leaving the team to join the BCCI as chief selector and then selector. He also served as the head coach of the Uttar Pradesh State team for a brief period.
As a player, Joshi represented India in 15 Tests and 69 ODIs between 1996 and 2001, earning recognition for his spin-bowling skills. His experience as a coach and selector adds significant value to the BCCI’s talent development initiatives.
